What Every Woman Over 40 Needs to Know About Bone Health

Hey girl! We don't usually think much about our bones until someone mentions osteoporosis, a bone density scan, or a fracture. But here's the thing: your bones are living tissue, and they are constantly changing. As women move through perimenopause and menopause, declining estrogen can accelerate bone loss, which makes midlife an especially important time to start paying attention. The good news? There is a lot we can do to support strong, healthy bones throughout our lives.

One of the most important things we can do is strength train. When you place an appropriate load on your bones through resistance exercises, you're giving your body a reason to maintain and strengthen that tissue. Squats, lunges, rows, presses, carries, and other resistance exercises can all play a role. Weight-bearing and, when appropriate, impact activities can also provide valuable stimulus. The key is progression and proper form—not throwing the heaviest weight you can find over your head and hoping for the best! Strong bones are built through consistent, intentional training over time.

Nutrition matters, too. Your bones need more than calcium alone. Adequate protein, calcium, vitamin D, and an overall nutrient-dense diet all contribute to bone health. And this is another reason I don't love extreme dieting for women in midlife. Chronically under-fueling your body doesn't support the strong, capable body we're trying to build. We want to give our bones and muscles the raw materials they need to do their jobs.

And don't forget the other pieces of the puzzle: balance training, mobility, recovery, and knowing your personal bone-health numbers when appropriate. A bone density scan can provide valuable information about where you are starting from and whether additional support is needed.

I've become especially passionate about this topic because strength and bone health aren't just about preventing a fracture someday. They're about maintaining your independence and confidence as you get older. I want to be the woman who can lift her suitcase, carry her groceries, get up from the floor, take a hike, travel, and keep doing the things she loves. That's the real goal. ❤️ So don't wait until you're worried about your bones to start taking care of them. Build your bone bank now—with strength, good nutrition, smart movement, and consistency. Your future self will thank you!

If you want to go deeper into bone health, tune into this month's episodes of The Sana Vida Pod. I'll be talking more about strength training, impact, osteoporosis, and how to exercise with confidence as you move through midlife. My goal is to help you understand your bones without the fear and overwhelm—because the more you know, the more empowered you are to take action!
