Calm Is a Strategy

Hey girl! This month, we're taling about the ability to be calm & STAY calm!
We tend to treat stress like it's just part of being a grown woman. Work, family, relationships, appointments, errands, responsibilities - the list doesn't exactly get shorter after 40. But living in a constant state of "go, go, go!" can take a toll. That's why I want to reframe calm. Calm isn't something you earn after you've finished everything on your to-do list. It's a strategy for taking care of yourself while you're living your actual life.
When we're stressed, our bodies respond by activating the stress response—heart rate increases, muscles tense, and our attention shifts toward dealing with the perceived threat. That's useful when you need to react quickly, but we aren't designed to live there all day. Recovery matters. Simple things like walking, breathing exercises, strength training, getting enough sleep, spending time with people who make you laugh, and creating some actual space in your schedule can help your body shift out of constant "on" mode. And yes, sometimes the most productive thing you can do is sit down and breathe for five minutes. I promise the laundry will still be there! 😉
October also gives me another reason to pause and think about taking care of ourselves. Breast Cancer Awareness Month is especially meaningful to me because breast cancer is one of the causes I care deeply about supporting. While stress isn't something we can point to as a single cause of breast cancer, this month is a good reminder not to put our own health on the back burner. Know your personal risk factors, stay current with recommended screenings, pay attention to changes in your body, and have those conversations with your healthcare provider. Caring for yourself isn't selfish, and being proactive about your health is part of the bigger picture.
So this month, I want you to think about calm a little differently. You don't have to eliminate stress from your life—that's not realistic, anyway. Instead, build recovery into your life on purpose. Set a boundary. Take the walk. Put your phone down. Get some sleep. Say no when you need to. Make the appointment you've been putting off. Your health isn't another item on the list that gets your attention after everyone else is taken care of. You are part of the list.
And if you're ready to make yourself a little more of a priority, I'd love for you to join me at The Sana Vida Experience, a wellness day here in Tucson created specifically for women in midlife. We'll spend the day cutting through some of the noise around strength, nutrition, sleep, stress, and movement—and, hopefully, leave feeling a little clearer about what actually matters. Come move, learn, laugh, and spend some time taking care of YOU. I'd love to see you there!
